Since 1998, Lyles Station, Indiana has been the setting for the Lyles Station New Beginnings Celebration. Held each Labor Day weekend on the grounds of the Lyles Consolidated School, the festival is a celebration of Indiana’s last remaining African-American settlement. The New Beginnings Celebration presents a full day of activities, including buggy rides, children’s games, entertainment by local and area artists, craftsmen, and artisans. Along with a variety of vendors, the festival is renowned for its food featuring barbecued meats prepared on-site by the men of Lyles Station.

Musical entertainment provided by various local and regional choirs and soloists continues from the stage throughout the day. Special entertainment in the past has included a dramatic reenactment of a nineteenth century African-American wedding by the Freetown Village Players from Indianapolis. Tony Lamont, co-host of the “Hoosier Millionaire” television program served as emcee and master of ceremonies for the 2001 festival.

The New Beginnings Celebration serves to raise awareness of the Lyles Station community as well as raise funds for the restoration of the Lyles Consolidated School.
